Construction Damage in Woodland Park, Lexington KY

Woodland Park in Lexington KY is the most important park in the city. Located in the heart of the city, heavily used for swimming, skateboarding, ball games and picnics, it is a tree-covered, shady refuge.  Many of the trees in the park are huge, old trees including some venerable, presettlement trees.

But today, the trees in the park are under assault. A construction project on the edge of the park has provided absolutely no protection for the trees.  Construction equipment is being driven around the trees and parked in their shade, compacting the soil.  The trees are exposed to injury because they have no protection.

Two important actions need to be taken:

  1. Tree protection zones need to be established immediately around the trees to prevent further damage.
  2. LFUCG (the city government) needs to be held accountable for allowing a construction project to proceed without a tree protection plan.

We will have more about this later today, but wanted to get this posted right away.  Please scroll down to look at the photographs, taken this morning.  Then, if you want something done, call Mayor Jim Gray at (859) 258-3100.
