Photographs of Woodland Pastures
Woodland pastures of ancient trees are quite distinct, but it takes some practice to recognize them. Here is a selection of characteristic woodland pastures in the Bluegrass and Nashville Basin. The color photographs are by Tom Kimmerer. The black and white photographs are by Thomas Knight from his 1904 book "Country Estates of the Bluegrass." Although Knight's interests were primarily in the architecture of the great farms, he included quite a few photographs of woodland pastures. These are the oldest known photographs of woodland pastures.
