We have posted a new article at Planet Experts, Death by a Thousand Cankers, about the tragedy of a new disease of black walnut. Although not yet in Kentucky, is it present in surrounding states. The disease is new and began in the western United States, where black walnuts have been introduced as ornamentals. Since 2010, thousand canker disease has been spreading in the east, and is now in Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia. There is a potential for this disease to interact with the effects of climate change to the detriment of a valuable species. Read about this threatening disease in my Planet Experts column, Death by a Thousand Cankers.
